A House Divided is a multimedia CD-ROM. In other words, graphics, video, audio, and text are brought together to tell a story. Consequently, your computer system must have enough RAM, processing power, and CD-ROM drive speed to play the CD. The more capable your computer system, the better A House Divided will perform.
There are two versions of A House Divided on the CD-ROM. "A House Divided (4MB)" is designed to run in a small memory partition and is suitable for 4 and 5MB Macintosh computers.
"A House Divided (8MB)" is designed to run in a larger memory partition. If your Macintosh has 8MB or more of RAM you should play this version of A House Divided.
RECOMMENDED SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
To play "A House Divided (8MB)", you need the following:
Ñ Apple Macintosh LCIII or greater (68030 processor or
greater is recommended)
Ñ A double-speed or greater CD-ROM drive
Ñ 8 megabytes of RAM
Ñ 256-color display
Ñ A 13" or larger monitor
Ñ System software version 7.0.1 or later
Ñ QuickTime software version 2.0 (included on the CD)
Ñ Apple CD-ROM software version 4.01 or later
MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
If your Macintosh has between 4 and 5MB of RAM, start up "A House Divided (4MB)". You will be able to access most of the features of the disc, although you will have to quit A House Divided to read the text documents included on the CD-ROM. For more information about viewing and printing documents, see the section called VIEWING AND PRINTING DOCUMENTS.
The minimum system requirements are:
Ñ Apple Macintosh LCIII or greater (68030 processor or

Ñ A double-speed or greater CD-ROM drive
Ñ At least 256-color capability
Ñ 4 megabytes of RAM
Ñ A 13" or larger monitor
Ñ System software version 7.0.1 or later
Ñ QuickTime software version 2.0 (included on the CD)
Ñ Apple CD-ROM software version 4.01 or later
Note: If your System file is large, e.g. has many fonts and extensions active, it may not allow enough free memory for A House Divided to display properly. You can check how much memory your System is taking by choosing About This Macintosh from the Apple menu in the Finder. A House Divided needs at least 2,500K free to run properly.
If the largest unused block is less than 2,500K, reduce the size of your System file by loading only a minimum number of fonts and extensions.
If your system still does not have 2,500K of free memory, you can turn on Virtual Memory in the Memory Control Panel. Virtual Memory will allow you to run A House Divided, but you will experience slower performance. To get the most out of A House Divided, we strongly urge you to play it on an 8MB system.
THE QUICKTIME 2.0 INSTALLER
The QuickTime 2.0 Installer places the extensions you need to play digital video in the appropriate locations in your System Folder. The system extensions it installs are QuickTime 2.0, Sound Manager 3.0, and the Apple Multimedia Tuner.
You can install the extensions all at once, or one at a time. To install the extensions all at once:
1. Double-click the System Extensions Installer.
2. Click Install. This installs all the extensions you need.
3. Click Yes.
4. When the installer finishes, click Restart.
5. Insert the CD-ROM and double-click A House Divided.
To install the extensions one at a time:
1. Double-click the System Extensions Installer.
2. Click Custom.
3. Select the item or items you wish to install.
4. Click Yes.
5. When the installer finishes, click Restart.
6. Insert the CD-ROM and double-click A House Divided.
If you have an older version of QuickTime installed in your System, the installer may not have removed the older version. Follow these steps to remove it.
1. Open the System folder on your startup hard drive.
2. Open the Extensions folder.
3. Select the QuickTime extension and choose Get Info from
the File menu.
4. If the version number is less than 2.0, drag the QuickTime
extension to the Trash.
5. Close the Extensions and System folders.
Note: For additional help installing extensions, see the manual that came with your Macintosh or with the System software you are using.
INSTALLING THE ADOBE ACROBAT READER
The Adobe Acrobat 2.0.1 Installer places files in a folder called Acrobat Reader 2.0 on your hard disk. These files are required to use the Adobe Acrobat Reader.
To run the Acrobat Installer:
1. Double Click the Adobe Acrobat 2.0.1 Installer.
2. Click Continue.
3. Click Install.
4. Click Restart.
Note: If your system already has a copy of ATM, the Acrobat installer will update your version to 3.8.2.
OPTIMIZING PERFORMANCE
The first step in optimizing performance is to make sure there is enough free memory to run A House Divided. One way to do this is to quit all other applications before starting A House Divided.
Although A House Divided runs directly from the CD-ROM drive, performance will improve if you copy the file "A House Divided (8MB)" to your hard disk and increase the amount of memory allocated to the application, provided your system has the memory to spare.
To increase the memory allocated to A House Divided:
1. Drag "A House Divided (8MB)" from the CD to your hard
drive.
2. Select "A House Divided (8MB)" on your hard disk and
choose Get Info from the file menu.
3. Type 4,096 in the preferred size box (or a higher number if you have more
free memory available).
4. Click the close box.
IMPROVING QUICKTIME PERFORMANCE
If you are running on a Macintosh with 4 megabytes of RAM and are having trouble playing QuickTime movies, try one or more of the following suggestions to improve performance.
1. Turn off all unnecessary extensions, fonts, and control
panels.
2. Turn off File Sharing in the Sharing Setup control panel.
3. Quit any other background applications or processes, such
as Background Printing in the Chooser.
4. Turn off Virtual Memory in the Memory Control Panel.
Note: When you turn off Virtual Memory, performance will improve as long as your system has enough RAM to allocate to A House Divided (2,500K). If you experience problems after turning off Virtual Memory, you'll have to forgo this performance enhancement, and turn Virtual Memory back on.
BACKGROUND MUSIC
If you want to start up with the background music turned off, press the Control key when you start A House Divided and hold it down until the ╥one moment, please╙ message disappears. To turn the background music back on, click the Piano keyboard in the Parlor. Clicking the piano keyboard toggles the background music on and off.
VIEWING AND PRINTING DOCUMENTS
If you have a Macintosh with 8MB or more of RAM, you will be able to open the text for books and transcripts from the Library in A House Divided. When you click one of the books in the Library, you launch a separate application called Adobe Acrobat Reader, which allows you to search, view, and print the text. To return to the Library after you are finished with the text, you must first quit Adobe Acrobat Reader.
If you are running A House Divided on a system with less than 8MB, you won╒t have enough RAM to run Acrobat and A House Divided simultaneously. However, you will be able to open the documents directly from the CD-ROM.
To open an Acrobat document from the CD-ROM:
1. Quit A House Divided.
2. Open the DOCS folder on the CD-ROM.
3. Double-click the Acrobat document you╒d like to see.
